The Ravens’ Hollow Guide to Annotating Books

Annotation is a great way to engage deeply with the books you read, making it easier to remember details, track themes, and enhance discussions—especially for our book club, The Ravens' Hollow! Whether you're new to annotating or looking for fresh ideas, this guide will help you make the most of your reading experience.

Why Annotate Your Books?

Annotating helps you:

  • Retain information – Marking key passages helps reinforce what you’ve read.

  • Engage with the story – Jotting down thoughts makes reading more interactive.

  • Prepare for discussions – Have insights ready for book club meetings.

  • Spot recurring themes – Noticing patterns enhances understanding.

Ways to Annotate

There’s no right or wrong way to annotate, but here are some popular methods:

1. Sticky Notes & Tabs

If you prefer keeping your books pristine, sticky notes are a great alternative to writing in them. Use different colors for:

  • Themes (e.g., love, betrayal, mystery)

  • Favorite quotes

  • Unanswered questions

  • Foreshadowing or symbolism

I like to use different colored tabs based on the book's genre and key themes. For romance novels, my tabs often focus on relationship development, while for thrillers and darker reads, I highlight unanswered questions or thought-provoking moments.2. Highlighting & Underlining

A simple way to mark important text. Color-coding can be helpful:

  • Pink – Romance or character relationships

  • Yellow – Important quotes or passages

  • Blue – World-building or setting details

  • Green – Themes or motifs

  • Orange – Plot twists and shocking moments

3. Writing in the Margins

Great for:

  • Quick reactions (“OMG!” or “I knew it!”)

  • Questions (“Why did the author do this?”)

  • Predictions (“I bet this character is hiding something.”)

4. Symbols & Abbreviations

Create a shorthand system for faster note-taking:

  • ⭐ – Favorite passage

  • 💡 – Important idea

  • 🔄 – Recurring theme

  • ❓ – Something confusing

5. Summarizing at the End of a Chapter

Jotting down a quick summary at the end of each chapter helps you track progress and refresh your memory before book club discussions.

Digital Annotation

Prefer e-books? Try these options:

  • Kindle Notes & Highlights – Save and organize annotations easily.

  • Notion or Evernote – Keep a digital reading journal.

  • Goodreads Reviews – Write notes in real-time for future reference.

Tips for Effective Annotations

  • Don’t overdo it – Focus on key moments.

  • Make it personal – Note what resonates with you.

  • Use different techniques – Experiment to find what works best.
